Renewing Our Foundation

Project Update – April 2017

artist’s rendering of the proposed look of the Delaware Avenue entranceOn April 14th, we received our Certificate of Occupancy just in time to open our new Welcome Center on Easter Sunday! There are still some small items to be completed between now and early May. The Newark Methodist Preschool’s playground equipment will be installed at the end of April. We are certainly improving the landscape along Delaware Avenue and showing the community that we are a vibrant faith community.

SonSpirit worship is now fully enjoying the new enhanced worship support A/V capabilities in Heritage Hall, and new worship furniture has arrived.

Sanctuary lighting work was completed in February. Work in the sanctuary included replacing incandescent floodlight spots with LEDs, adding track lighting, repairing/painting ceiling and wall plaster, and installing new computerized lighting controls.

To complete an LED bulb–installation project, we have replaced 440 screw-in incandescent and CFL bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs. A State of Delaware Energy Grant and donations from two members paid for all except $500 of the total project cost of $4,300.

Campaign Background

A Church Conference was held on Sunday, March 15, 2015, to consider the preliminary ROF Phase A(2016) Project (also known as “ROF2”) plans. The Wilmington District Superintendent, the Rev. Derrick E. Porter, presided. The congregation voted unanimously to authorize the Building Committee to move forward with refining plans for the Phase A(2016) Project (see presentation link below). The capital campaign kickoff for this phase of the project was held on Sunday, October 18, 2015. This phase of the project will complete several of the major needed building enhancements that were identified in the ROF Master Plan developed several years ago. The planned scope elements of the project are:

  • parking lot improvements/reconfiguration
  • a new welcome center (including handicap-accessible entrance and lobby addition) off the Delaware Ave. parking lot
  • upgrades to Heritage Hall
  • new lighting in the sanctuary
  • renovations to six restrooms
